Non-Hazardous Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal in California

Non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste sounds pretty harmless — it has “non-hazardous” in the name, after all. But before you go and toss your non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste in the trash, let’s take a closer look at what that really means.Non-Hazardous Parmaceutical Waste

What is non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste?

Non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste is something of a misnomer, as it poses a serious health risk to the environment. A better name for it would be non-RCRA pharmaceutical waste, as it doesn’t appear on the EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, or RCRA, hazardous chemical list. Non-hazardous or non-RCRA pharmaceutical waste is not governed by RCRA regulations, but it still has to be carefully and properly disposed of to protect our communities and the environment.

Types of non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste includes:

  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Antibiotics
  • Hormones
  • Contraceptives
  • Non-RCRA prescription medications

If you’re unsure which of your pharmaceuticals fall under hazardous or non-hazardous, contact Waste Management’s PharmEcology Team for assistance in determining which program best suits your needs.

Non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste disposal

Non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste must be incinerated or processed by an approved alternative technology. This waste is often disposed of in white containers with blue lids and labeled “incineration only” or “high heat.” Make sure you dispose of your non-RCRA pharmaceutical waste separately from your RCRA pharmaceutical waste to ensure you stay compliant.
