What is medical waste?

Medical waste is a broad term used to describe pretty much any item that comes into contact with bodily fluids. More specifically, medical waste is any waste generated in the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of a human or animal. These materials are subject to local, state and federal regulations and cannot be disposed of in the regular trash as they can be dangerous to humans and the environment.

Some common types of medical waste include:

  • Pourable, liquid blood or OPIM (Otherwise Potentially Infectious Material)
  • Blood saturated items
  • Items with caked dry blood that can flake and/or be reconstituted with liquid
  • Sharps with or without needles that have come into contact with blood or OPIM (syringes without needles routinely placed in sharps containers for consistency and to reduce concern at landfills).
  • Leftover or residual medication
  • Tissue, organs, limbs, animals used in testing
  • Trace chemo
